Your speaking rate is a habit. It usually reflects your personality. People who think visually tend to talk faster than those who are auditory or kinesthetic thinkers. Does this describe you?

Another reason we talk fast is we’re nervous. When we need to say something important and just want to get it off our chests, we race to get finished. Relief is what we want.

However, if we speak too quickly, it’s possible the listener will miss something we said.

You can slow your speech enough to be articulate and still keep the best parts of your personality intact. Here are three simple ways to do that.

Listen to Newscasters

You don’t have to care what they’re talking about.

You’re listening for:

  • Pace
  • Rhythm
  • Articulation

Newscasters are paid to talk clearly. They only have one chance to get it right. And if you noticed many of them sound alike, there is a reason for that.

They’ve found the general American accent is the easiest for viewers to understand.
