Remembering The Man Who Taught Me How To Be One

How Pastor Dan loved lavishly in the midst of teenage angst

Today I joined friends to remember a man we all loved, admired, and looked up to.

Dan May had three lifelong loves:

  • His family
  • People
  • Jesus

Dan Loved His Family

The first five rows on the right side of the sanctuary today were Dan’s family. Children. Spouses. Grandchildren. Great grandchildren.

I knew 4 of Dan’s 6 children, as his two oldest had left home by the time I met Dan.

Dan had 16 grandchildren and I can’t recall how many great grands. He loved every one of them dearly. One granddaughter reached out to her cousins and asked for their favorite memories. The replies filled several pages!

Dan showed his love by calling to check in. He would always listen, offer advice, and promise to pray.

And he’d never say goodbye when he was done. He’d just end with “love you” and hang up, knowing they’d talk again soon.

His youngest daughter Patty shared that Dan loved them through every struggle, every difficult relationship, and every addiction. He was never ashamed of any of…
