The first book I ever wrote came from a class I taught at church on prayer.

The beauty of that was I could test the curriculum before I published. I could ask my students questions and answer the ones they asked. This was a quick and easy way to find out what resonated with them.

The next book I wrote was about leadership. It started as a series for a client who shared this information with his clients. Early in the series, he emailed me and said, “Frank, this stuff is good. You need to put this into a book.”

From there I learned everything I could about writing and selling a book on Amazon.

The First Thing

Decide what you want your book to do. If you’re going to go to all the trouble to write, you’d probably like to sell a few, wouldn’t you?

It’s easier to sell a book on a topic people are already asking about. It’s best if you have experience in the topic you’re covering, but it’s not crucial. So long as you can learn enough to present it in a useful way, you can sell some books.
