We give participation certificates here in American schools so kids don’t have their self-esteem wounded. Are they really so fragile?

The problem is, as you mentioned, that a certificate means nothing if there’s no win.

I say it’s good to enter contests so you improve as a writer. Even without an award, stretching yourself into something better is the real win, certificate or not.

Then when you do publish, you’ll have better work to share.
