The only way to become a better writer is to write.

Do it every day if you can.

Writing a lot is a start. However, it won’t guarantee you find your voice, engage readers, or make a difference.

Here are three ways you can do that.

Write Uninhibited in Private

Some call this journaling. Others say it’s freewriting. Whatever you call it, it’s uncensored writing.

Nobody but you will see your private writing. So say whatever you want. Don’t hold back, soften your words, or stop to think first.

The easiest way to get your first thoughts on paper is to pick a prompt and set a timer. The only rule is to keep your pen moving or your fingers typing.

You can edit later.

You might be surprised at what lands on the page.

Why is this practice important?

  • You’ll have more to edit.
  • Your voice will come out.
  • Your end product will be more interesting.
