Zachary, here are a few things I’ve learned that will allow to write for almost any publication.

It’s important to remember that publications want a few things from you.

  1. They want a draft. Let them do the publishing. And be sure you edit your piece so that it sings. Editors don’t need more work cleaning up yours.
  2. Follow the guidelines. It’s okay to break rules in other places, but when you do it at the front door, they won’t open it for you.
  3. Make them look good. If you want a friend, be friendly. Help the editor carry our her mission. Leave readers better than you found them. Then they’ll invite you back for more.
  4. Remember the publication belongs to them. You’re a player in the game. Play your hand well and everyone wins.

You need publications to grow your audience. See them as partners. Submit your work to those that align with your mission. And promote their other posts on your social media profiles when you can.

If you’ll do these things, you’ll be amazed at where you are a year from now.
